E-QUAL Seminar (Ghent, Belgium – 27 March 2014)

The Centre of Expertise E-QUAL was established late 2011 within the Faculty of Education, Health and Social Work of the University College Ghent (Belgium). It wishes to acquire and disseminate knowledge concerning the theme of Quality of Life in a systematic manner, in order to promote the Quality of Life of persons in socially vulnerable situations such as persons with disabilities, persons with mental health problems, etc.

On Thursday 27 March 2014, E-QUAL organises its biennual seminar focusing on: "Quality of Life and the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities: seen from an interdisciplinary context".

During this seminar, the Quality of Life model will be discussed as a possible framework for the operationalization of human rights for people in socially vulnerable living situations. Several national and international experts will contribute to the seminar.

After a brief introduction by Prof. Dr. Geert Van Hove, Dr. Soumitra Pathare (India) will present the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and discuss the way in which this convention can be used when working with people with mental health problems. Afterwards Prof. Dr. Robert Schalock will make the connection between the Convention and the Quality of Life framework when working with people in socially vulnerable living situations.

The plenary lectures will be concluded with a panel discussion with experts from different sectors on the applicability of this framework in everyday practice. In the afternoon, different strategies will be introduced in the various workshops in order to apply the Quality of Life framework in practice.
